Bubblers

A bubbler is a handheld water pipe. It has a bowl, a small water chamber and a mouthpiece, giving you the filtration of a bong in something you can hold in one hand.

It is smoother, because the water cools the smoke and catches some ash. The trade off is that it needs emptying and cleaning far more often than a dry pipe.

Just enough to cover the bottom of the downstem, usually an inch or so. Too much and you pull water into your mouth. Tilt it and check the level before you light.

It works on the same principle but at a much smaller scale. Bubblers are handheld and usually have a fixed downstem, where bongs stand on their own and typically take removable parts.

Empty the water, add isopropyl and coarse salt, cover the openings and shake, then rinse thoroughly. Because most have fixed downstems you cannot dismantle them, so soak the whole piece.

The water traps some of it, so there is less smell during use than a dry pipe. Standing water left in the chamber smells considerably worse, so empty it after each session.

A hammer bubbler is shaped so it lies flat and stands on its own without rolling. It is the most stable shape and the least likely to spill when you put it down.

Yes. They are more forgiving than a dry pipe because the water softens the draw, and simpler to manage than a full sized water piece.
